Designer par excellence – Tom Ford has been dressing up James Bond since the last Bond flick – Quantum of Solace. Ford has also dressed up Daniel Craig who plays Bond 007 in SkyFall that releases in October this year. Prior to Tom Ford the honour of dressing James Bond was with the Italian luxury brand Brioni.
The recently released pictures give us a hint of what look Tom Ford has given James Bond in SkyFall. Ford has dressed Bond in a much more modern direction than we’ve seen in recent years and also has added elements of style never seen before in Bond’s wardrobe. Though the narrow lapels and narrow tie may resemble 1960′s suits, the cut and fit of the suit follows the trends of the past few years. The cut and fit of Daniel Craig’s suits in SkyFall shows suits that are a size too small on Daniel Craig. As per the image the jacket has a snug-fit and cut short (it doesn’t completely cover his buttocks), whilst the flat-front trousers have a very low rise and slim-fit. It’s the complete opposite of Timothy Dalton’s suits in Licence to Kill. But Tom Ford gets one thing right that most other current short fashion suits get wrong: the fastening button is still at the waist and isn’t pushed up 3 inches too high.
The Tom Ford shirts as seen in the images feature tab collars. Tab collars have been around since the twenties and are collars that are styled like buttoned-down collars but with no buttons. Al Pacino wore them in Scent of a Woman. Bond has never worn a tab collar before, and its affected look that frames the tie knot probably isn’t something that Ian Fleming would have liked. But it’s also a classic style and is always correct with a lounge suit.
This is what Tom Ford said in an interview, “I could not be happier to be dressing Daniel Craig again in the next James Bond film. James Bond epitomizes the TOM FORD man in his elegance, style and love of luxury. I am thrilled to move forward with this iconic character.”
