There are different styles of taking a shower or a bath. The typical Desi style is to squat and pour mugs of water from a bucket. Some who find it difficult to squat, use a low height plastic stool to sit on it. The urban style is usually to step under a shower.
I was shocked to discover this very Desi plastic bath stool at none other than Sanjay and Shalini Passis’ dream house. The modest stool isn’t what you expect in a designer home, which sources say costed all inclusive a whooping Rs. 300 Crores. How did I discover the bath stool? No I wasn’t invited to the majestic Passi House but my eyes, always hunting for details found it in the photos in the May issue of the Wallpaper magazine.
Check out this picture in which Shalini Passi is posing in a leopard print dress by Dolce & Gabbana, in the rose-motif mosaic-tiled bathroom. If you look at the bottom end of the photograph, you will see her standing on the Desi Bath Stool. I am amazed at both, to see a stool in the designer bathroom and oversight on Wallpaper Magazine’s part who could have photoshopped and erased that ugly stool.
As I was flipping through the pages of the May Issue of the Wallpaper Magazine, I came across this piece – “Art collector Shalini Passi’s New Delhi home.” Gawd since when Shalini Passi is known as an ‘Art Collector’? Anybody with loads of moolah and loads of paintings and sculptures qualifies as an art collector???
But I got a bigger shock when I discovered that Shalini Passi is not only an ‘Art Collector’ but an ‘Interior Designer/Decorator’ too. This is what the writer says, “Shalini Passi’s New Delhi home is a work of considerable sophistication, and although she worked with a Delhi practice on early versions of the design (Passi has no formal architectural training), the house is emphatically her own vision.” Wah, so conveniently Mrs. Passi stole the credit from MorphoGenesis, the top-class architect/designer who painstakingly did each and every bit of the Passis’ fabulous house in Golf Links. “She worked with a Delhi Practice on early versions of the design…” is what Wallpaper states. I don’t understand this need for people to hog all the limelight and not give credit where it’s due. Even the lighting was done by an international lighting company.
If Shalini Passi did the entire interiors the house would have looked as cluttered and garish as she looks here while posing in front of the rose-motif mosaic-tiled bathroom in a leopard print dress by Dolce & Gabbana!
This is the same house where Shahrukh & Gauri came to on conditions of - ‘Absolutely No Media’ – to be allowed by the Passis. But now Shalini must be happy with Wallpaper not only showcasing her house but also capturing her in various dramatic posees in her designer labels.
I have heard that Shalini and Sanjay Passi have hired a sort of manager who takes any guest visiting their new house on a guided tour (even if one isn’t keen), which lasts almost half-an-hour. Now once you flip through the Wallpaper, opulence oozes from every corner of the house. Wonder if Ratan Tata would had mentioned the Passi house along with Mukesh Ambani’s Antilla if he had seen it. On second thoughts, no Ratan Tata wouldn’t have done that coz a li’l birdie said Tata and Sr. Passi are bum-chums!

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan are in Delhi to be part of the wedding celebration in Passi family. Saturday night Sanjay and Shalini Passi hosted a dinner do and SRK, Gauri and their ‘compulsory baggage’ – Arjun and Mehr Rampal were there. ShahRukh wanted absolute media blackout at this dinner.
I feel bad for Sanjay and Shalini Passi as they love to be on Page3. In fact the Passi couple used to send Rs.25,000 to every Page3 photographer in Delhi on Diwali till few years back. Then I wrote about it in a newspaper and the 25K Diwali Bonanza to shutterbugs stopped. I still get an earful from them. And when it comes to flaunting their friendship with SRK and Gauri, they tactically leak the private pictures to tabloids once SRK leaves. It happened few years back when Passis sent the private pictures to Delhi Times the moment SRK boarded his flight.
But last night Shalini and Sanjay’s phones went unanswered. They didn’t dare to risk offending SRK by sneaking in paparazzi. Imagine their predicament while observing King Khan’s media blackout???
