Indian Cinema’s once-upon-a-time Showman – Subhash Ghai faded out and is no more successful in pulling in the audience for his movie but Indian fashion’s ultimate showman – Rohit Bal weaves his magic and cast his spell every time.
Rohit Bal’s shows are hypnotic. Their grandeur, their hype and the mad rush to watch his show somehow makes his fashion shows something more than a presentation of garments. They also pack in drama, element of surprise and a great deal of entertainment. At the Bal’s Grand Finale show for Van Heusen India Men’s Week 2010 I witnessed women who would otherwise be shocked out of their wits to see two male models enticing each other were clapping and laughing. It seems Gudda can get away with anything.
Coming back to the show and the clothes, well they were typically Rohit Bal – OTT but in a nice way, Lotuses blooming all over in form of embellishments, ornate yet not loud and dramatic yet wearable. The use of velvet, 3D embroidery in kitsch colours on trousers, brocade jackets and quilted ones worn with Kutch(y) tops and Jodhpurs and elaborate sherwanis with Gaucho pants and Aladdin pants made the collection a vibrant one even though the palette were monochromatic black and ivory. Seeing a Rohit bal Grand Finale is almost like taking a trip to a Costume Gallery. However I can’t ignore the fact that innovations are always unique in Bal’s collection. It was here that I saw inverse pleats and accordion pleats on Jodhpur breeches, shredded pink stain trims on the shoulders of black velvet jackets and embroidered epaulettes too.John Abraham dressed in a sheer tee with Bal’s signature lotus motif and black jodhpurs left the women gaping and then Gudda took the bow in his inimitable style, dancing down the ramp with John and his band of boys.
When Mehr Jesia Rampal and Arjun Rampal bagged the hugely lucrative deal of hosting Fashion Shows at post-match IPL Night parties, I guessed Rohit Bal would be the designer to showcase in the Finale bash. Why? Well I have many reasons to think Gudda would had got it because (a) Arjun Rampal whatever he is today is primarily because of Gudda, (b) Gudda is one of the stalwarts of Indian fashion and a showman apt for IPL kinda show and (c) Because Tarun Tahiliani had already done an IPL show at IPL2 in South Africa. But yet again Tarun Tahiliani is the finale designer for the IPL3 Grand Bash tomorrow, i.e the 23rd. Tarun’s aces are that Mehr Rampal and TT are very close and Lalit Modi’s wife, Minal has been a Muse of Tahiliani since long. Mind you, I am not undermining Tarun’s stature as a designer. He too is a stalwart. I am just expressing my thoughts on why Gudda didn’t do the Final Show.
Yes Gudda is unwell but Mehr Rampal finalised the list of designers much before Bal suffered that huge attack. But I was wondering it Gudda’s no-show has got to do something with the Grand Finale of WIFW spring-summer 2010? Gudda was the Finale designer and Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor were the show-stoppers. Arjun Rampal and Dino Morea too were suppose to walk the ramp then but Arjun Rampal insisted that he’ll be the show-stopper and not Kat & Ranbir. The demand seemed too much for Wills and Gudda. Rampal fumed and walked off from the show. It was a bit too much for Arjun Rampal to demand the show-stopper when Kat and Ranbir were there. The beautiful couple were literally ruling the Bollywood Box Office then. Is Arjun Rampal settling scores? Nah, he can’t be that petty…
Money can’t buy you style and Delhi butterfly – Tanisha Mohan is the perfect example of it. Robbie Mohan, her docile hubby has pots of money, which Tashu dear splurges like there’s no tomorrow but her dressing sense can be best described as ‘Tacky’. She is what we call a ‘Brand Whore’ – top to bottom laden with brands.
Tanisha has also flirted with ramp walking. Below you see her walking the ramp for Ranna Gill’s Spring-Summer 2010 show at WIFW. Good lord! What made Ranna do such a huge compromise for her show? I poked my nose around and discovered that Tanisha bought the entire collection to be on the ramp as a show-stopper. Ufff…things these wannabes do for their 15 seconds of fame.I am posting more pictures of Tanisha below to give you a glimpse of her tacky dress-sense (and don’t miss those podgy knees). Mind you, they are all expensive stuff but as I said earlier – Money can’t Buy You Style! Any stylists willing to help Tashu out? If yes, do express your desire and I’ll recommend you. Don’t worry, moolah is never a problem with Tanisha!
