In my decade and half long career as a fashion scribe, I haven’t seen such a blatant copying of design by one designer of another designer’s work. This shameless copying was done by a new name in fashion – Riyaz Gangji. He copied a bridal ensemble of Delhi based designer duo – Parvesh & Jai who showed their creation in July 2009. Riyaz showed almost a ditto copy of an elaborate lehenga-choli in Saji-Wajid’s Music inspired show on the 9th of this month. The pictures say it all. This is what Riyaz Gangji showed on 9th of May 2010 as his show-stopper for the bridal collection. Now see the original design by Parvesh & Jai that they showcased in Bangalore Fashion Week in July 2009 below. Look closely at the similarity of design in the choli and the colour-combo and the embellishment on the lehenga. It’s a shameless COPY.Who is Riyaz Gangji? Well I did some digging up and discovered that he used to register as a buyer at Lakme Fashion Week. Then suddenly last season he emerged as a designer at Lakme Fashion Week. I am sure Mr. Anil Chopra wouldn’t appreciate Gangji’s copying ways. The worst part is that Riyaz bought pieces from Parvesh and Jai when he attended LFW as a buyer. It’s another story that he defaulted in payment and the matter is sub-judice. What a novel way to turn designer, huh? Become a buyer, horde designs of other designers, default on payment and then emerge as a designer buy copying designs of the same designers he bought for his store – Libas. Someone truly said, “Nakal Mein Bhi Akal Chaiye”, which I doubt Riyaz Gangji has!

The number of Fashion Weeks and Fashion Bodies India have is greater than the sum total of Fashion Weeks held in London, Milan, New York and Paris. Besides the primary two – the India Fashion Week organised by Fashion Designers Council of India (FDCI) and Lakme Fashion Week organised by Reliance-IMG the other Fashion Weeks […]
Lakme Fashion Week has inducted Rohit Bal in their Advisory Panel. Post Wendell Rodricks exit from the LFW panel, a slot was vacant and Lakme filled up ably with Gudda. Does that mean we will get to see Bal doing the Grand Finale at the forthcoming Lakme Fashion Week? Most likely, I would say!
Indian Fashion Fraternity’s one popular couple have split. It’s nothing to cheer about but a li’l birdie told me that it was an IPL Cheerleader who precipitated the split of an already troubled relation. And I thought ‘Cheerleaders’ are suppose to ‘cheer-up’ people but here the IPL Cheerleaders are causing lot of heartburn. Ravi Krishnan, […]
No, Amitabh bachchan has never ever been spotted at a Fashion Week. He made his debut Fashion Week appearance at Nachiket Barve’s Winter/Festive 2010 show on the 3rd Day of Lakme Fashion Week. Bachchans have been to Abu-Sandeep’s show, even walked the ramp but not in a show that’s a part of a fashion week. […]
When UTV Stars announced their soon-to-be-aired show – Keeping Up With The Khan Sisters based on the reality TV Show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, everybody started guessing which Khan Sisters are these. Most though its gonna be Malaika Arora Khan and Amrita Arora because when it comes to the Butt department, Malaika Arora Khan […]
Ujjwala Raut is a global supermodel and India’s pride. Expectations from a supermodel are super high too. Last night she walked the ramp for jewellery designer, Farah Khan at the Lakme Fashion Week and the two most visible images on the digital media were not flattering at all. The ‘pelvis-high’ slit black gown and the ‘ugly-green’ […]
LFW F/W OOPS..W/F 2010 DAY1 At the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 (I have been messing up the acronym of Winter/Festive – W/F with F/W – Fall/Winter. In case I do mess up again, pardon me because we are so enslaved to F/W.) I had my first tryst with Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Mumbai. I […]
Lakme Fashion Week was anyway going downhill for quiet sometime now as it had become nothing but a Bollywood Tamasha. But now that Old Guards have given way to the new team, the exodus of designers loyal to Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) to Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) was expected. After the face of LFW […]
The Van Heusen Indian Mensweek (VHIMW) 2011 is kicking off from the 2nd of September till the 4th of September 2011 at The Grand. The list of participants is impressive but the best thing I feel is that FDCI has been right in keeping the Mensweek compact as a 3-day affair. 5-Day event would had […]
